Description

Gritty, powerful and daringly revolutionary, Cruel Britannia: After Frankenstein is a transgender reimagining of Shelley's seminal novel, set in the year of our Lord 1980. Maggie Thatcher's Britain: a monstrous, chaos-ridden world of gothic proportions that Shelley would be proud of. A hauntingly beautiful and visceral experience where echoes of the past reverberate with relevance and the streets resound with the cries of the dispossessed. Directed by Blank Space Productions' Cohan, critically acclaimed writer/performer Kristen Smyth breathes life into this evocative new production which questions how we determine who we'll call monsters and who we won't.

Having misconstrued what I was walking into...I must say I was delighted. Her performance was hauntingly raw and triggering in the best way. The story was a bit of a fever dream, however, I was along for the ride and would not have it any other way. Great use of lights and sound. The minimal set was a solid choice! Her (Bowie-like) singing, counting fingers, and red satin dress with the boots will forever be with me. Well done.

I have never been more confused in my life. It was a nonsensical fever dream full of ill-established characters and tangential plot. It was delivered in a nearly monotone slog that only further obscured the ideas the author/performer was trying to get across. I felt as if I was being held hostage.

Poetically written and powerfully performed - a gritty, reflective piece that really has you hanging on to every word. Thoroughly enjoyed!

Scary, glorious, trans joy! A beautifully dark journey of self-discovery and the brutality of suppressing one's true self. Prepare for cathartic tears and a truly powerful performance by Smyth. A MUST SEE!

It’s the type of production that stays with you long after you’ve left the theatre.
