Description
Cringe Effect unfolds in a Portland Anorexia Rehabilitation Centre where Ce, a long-time anorexia struggler, confides in the audience, embarking on a treatment journey. The narrative introduces patients, Gabby the nutritionist, and therapist Yara. Ce recounts her origin as Cece, a girl shaped by societal expectations and low self-esteem. Childhood friend Sammy and well-intentioned parents contribute to her transformation into Ce, the anorexic, and her alter ego, "The Bitch”. Near-death experiences punctuate her tumultuous journey. The play follows Ce's evolution from denial to acceptance, offering a courageous, hauntingly beautiful and darkly comedic exploration of human frailty and resilience. Please note that while all media gallery content is provided by verified members of the event, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society does not review or approve this content before it is posted. One of my favorite one-person plays at the fringe - seemed to draw upon actress' own experience, which really made it meaningful for me. Devastating social message about contributory factors towards people suffering with eating disorders, incredibly invigorating and inspiring. Shows like The Cringe Effect are why the Fringe needs to carry on forevermore.

A moving, funny and fully honest script brought home by a phenomenal performance. Cecilia has you feeling all the feels as she tells her story. There's some home truths and uncomfortable realities expertly exposed and explored. This is a one woman show at its best.

A very powerful and moving performance. Honest and personal, it combines the darkest areas of mental health with bursts of comic relief. Brilliant writing and a gripping performance. An absolute must see.

Cecilia Marshall isn't just someone who has written about a personal experience - she's a multi-faceted actress who will hold your attention and take you on a journey in a totally engaging way. The topic is a painful one but this actress never sits in emotion but rather leads you to your own. I thought I was relatively informed about anorexia, having known several people with the disorder - but I discovered that I knew next too nothing and am grateful to be handed a deeper understanding of this baffling and awful human experience. Direction is perfect, pacing lovely. Highly recommend.

This play should be seen by as many people as possible. Not only is this monologue very well written and performed by Cecelia Marshall, it also delivers an important message, that should be taught in schools. You will leave the theater in a whirlwind of emotions, but mostly with a lot of gratitude.

A harrowing story with a tour de force central performance

Highly recommended. Informative, funny, sad, some parts made a wince especially about the mother who unwittingly encouraged her daughter’s eating disorder. I took my two daughters (13 and 15) to see this. My youngest was laughing at parts and in tears at the end. The writer and star spent time talking with her after the performance.
It should be shown in schools for ages 13 and above.

This is an incredible show that covers such an important topic with sensitivity and elements of humour. Cecelia‘s performance was beautiful, deeply moving and I found myself crying with empathy for the character. Her struggles felt incredibly relatable and I came away thinking about how critical I am of myself/body and the damage that creates over time.

One of the most touching, honest and vulnerable pieces of theater I have seen.
Go see it if you have the chance.

With great sensitivity, Cecilia Marshal and director Mathilde Berry bring the topic of anorexia to the stage. Cecilia Marshall switches roles fluidly and takes us along on the difficult journey out of addiction without forgetting the humour. A powerful piece!

Cecilia is mesmerising in this one woman show that she wrote about her personal struggle with an eating disorder. Whilst the subject matter is very intense, the show made me both laugh and cry. I particularly loved the range of characters that Cecilia has developed and which she brings to life throughout the show. I'd highly recommend going to see this show!

A truly insightful look at, into, and behind an issue that goes beyond the superficial treatment often given in mainstream coverage. Cecelia Marshall is a wonder- displaying vulnerability and fragility, charm, and wit… the Cringe Effect is touching and thought-provoking and a beautiful sharing of an important topic.

Cecelia Marshall gives a powerhouse performance! Those that can relate to the subject matter will feel satisfaction knowing they aren’t alone in their struggle, while those that don’t will be forced to empathize thanks to her natural relatability. Cecelia’s ability to morph into different characters made me almost forget I was watching a one woman show. The feeling of being punched in the gut would have hurt if I wasn’t constantly doubled over laughing. A must see!

I had the chance to see the play. The performance of Cecelia is just outstanding. The subject of anorexia is not easy and she brings both very intense emotional moments and some humour too as she embarks us on her treatment journey.
A one woman show highly recommended !

Cecelia is absolutely incredible! Her performance is so touching yet humorous. She does an amazing job at conveying the experience and the feelings connected with the topic of EDs. I was very moved, inspired, sad, all at once - and she achieves that while being alone on stage. I can only wholeheartedly recommend this show!

Great theater piece written by the actress Cecelia herself. It sensibilizes us to the danger of anorexia by taking us through the journey into hell of hungering. A very emotional play, highly recommended, fantastic actress, great staging.

Cecilia's play is hilarious and very important in today's times of an Instagrammable life. You will be taken on a journey where surprises are a part of the game, and the play will leave you in a state of catharsis—you will empathize even if you don't have a history of an eating disorder. Very valuable!
