Description

Join us for a sip of mezcal at this Day of the Dead-style theatrical experience. Juan Preciado made a promise to his mother on her deathbed: revenge on his long-lost father. Follow his journey through the worlds of the living and the dead, fuelled by music and storytelling. Séance meets musical in this intimate reimagining of seminal novel Pedro Páramo, by mestiza playwright Conchi León. Featuring music by Pablo Chemor, rooted in folklore, performed using traditional instruments. This original Mexican musical makes its international debut, following a sold-out premiere in Mexico City. Performed in Spanish with English surtitles.

Great performance from really talented actors! The ambience was outstanding, the acting was superb, a really great theatre experience. I think the play being in Spanish just makes it even more authentic and interesting. Really hope to see more from this group in the future.

Perfect Bliss. This is a very rare thing for Edinburgh these days, exceptional virtuosity in all departments.

Fantastic 70 mins of international fringe theatre. Yes, I did find it a little tricky to understand fully, but it didn’t really matter as the performances are so engaging. Some superb acting from the more senior ladies in the cast. So refreshing that the show matches the advertising blurb and the Mezcal is so smoky and delicious! :-D Can see why now sold out.. please come back with more stuff in future years!

Exactly what I want to see at the Fringe! Completely unique, from artists who usually perform in another continent and I may never get to see otherwise. The closeness of the performance space makes the incredible music intense. Highly recommend!

A dark Mexican literature classic embellished by a beautiful musical performance. You may need the mezcal you're offered before entering the room to digest the different ghost stories and human stories that haunt the town of Comala. Quite glad that I got to see this at the Fringe!

I loved this show, it has the quality of a strange, intoxicating dream. I had never heard of the novel but I can't wait to read it now. The play has lots of layers and yes, there is some complexity in the time jumps, the surtitles, and the actors playing several characters, but I think if you're willing to go on a bit of a ride, it's a wonderful experience that will transport you and give you lots to think about. I love the magic realism aspect of it, and the acting and music was fantastic. If you've liked things like Palm Spring, Outer Range or Russian Doll for instance, you will love this too.

Definitely worth going although I will say I still found the story very challenging to understand as a fluent Spanish speaker. Speaking Spanish is not enough to unpick the whole of what is going on. I imagine if you don't speak Spanish, it could be even harder. Some kind of programme or info sheet would probably help - family trees??!!

A very interesting stage setting and talented cast. Unfortunately, it was difficult to follow the story in English since looking at the translation on the screen took away the joy of actually watching the performance. 4/5 if you understand Mexican, otherwise, its a challenge!

Comala, Comala takes on the titanic task of adapting Juan Rulfo’s 1955 novel Pedro Páramo, not only into a play but a musical. The music by Pablo Chemor is original, intricate, emotional and elevates the storytelling. The performers are unbelievable, skilled at instruments, singing and acting. "Outstanding Show"

Comala Comala presents its audience a nonlinear theatre experience. It would be fruitless to attempt to catch every word, character change, or blocking decision in order to understand the show completely. Instead, let the show wash over you, fully losing yourself in the folklore.
