Description

'I think I felt so happy in my label up until now that it feels so scary for it suddenly not to fit right any more.' Kelsie came to university happily identifying as a bisexual woman, until everyone around her was actually having sex. Cherry follows her as she navigates her feelings, her friendships and exploring a different label: asexuality. The show encapsulates the experience of finding your true, queer self and your people when emerging into adulthood – you don’t have to get it right the first time, and there’s always a chance to grow.

One of my personal Fringe favourites this year! The acting was amazing, laugh-out-loud funny and a 100% authentic representation of university students. Through a relatively large cast, the play managed to capture the tensions of asexuality (as far as I could see the only show about this at this year's Fringe!) through a variety of different combinations of characters and conversations. Both moving and funny, this was a perfect way to end a long day at the Fringe! Would love to see more shows by this group.

I loved spending the evening with these guys. Their energy and sense of fun was contagious. Great performance from everyone. Enjoyed being part of their conversations and their struggles. Five stars.

Thoroughly enjoyable well written show with strong characters performed by a cast of talented actors. Funny and charming throughout with a universal message for all regardless of sexual orientation. A pleasure to watch, would highly recommend!

It's a cliché to say "the kids are alright" but if this piece reflects reality at all, then there's definitely hope for the future. Queerness is presented refreshingly without shame, and even if self discovery is still fraught with angst, it's a collaborative process of community and interaction. Maybe it's naive, but that's not always a bad thing.

Cherry is a story revolving around the discourse of LGBTQ+ topics, but the core of the story is about found family, helping each other through struggles whilst growing up themselves in those formative uni years.

The plot is relatively self contained and focused, and didn't strive to overstretch oneself with the the many ideas it could have discussed.

The shining part is easily the characterisation. With actors that are very polished in their craft and well rehearsed, dialogues and dynamics are delightfully natural and fluid, which comes as no surprise as it is written and expressed by people who indeed have lived the story.

This production serves as a comforting friend to those who questions one's identity, as it does as an ode to the precious communal friendships we made along the way, and a reflection on these wild, tumultuous, funny, chaotic, sweet years of life.

Loved 'Cherry'. Enjoyed it so much I went back to see it a second time! Funny, touching, poignant and relatable with very well drawn characters. Definitely recommend.

With plenty of laughs, heartfelt characters and a well-written telling of what it means to struggle finding your place in the world - and what it looks like to support others in that struggle - Cherry is absolutely worth the watch!

Cherry is well worth seeing. The writing is heartfelt & authentic and there's a great cast. The portrayal of Kelsie, as she reveals to a friend how confused she is about her sexuality and how often she feels excluded and doesn't fit in, is touching and sensitively performed. Her journey as she discovers that actually not everyone around her is as confident about themselves as they appear and together they find a place to be heard, unjudged and included is a joy to watch. Honest, sad in places, funny and uplifting.

Loved this so much! Incredibly funny and great energy from the cast with some real stand outs. Great script which did a good job balancing the humor with discussing a serious subject in a really insightful way. Beyond that the show just really captured feeling and vibe of student life in a way that really stood out from similar performances. Would definitely recommend

Hillarious. Good fun and lighthearted, mixed with some moments of genuine honesty and struggle from the characters. I could see my friends in each of the characters as we have definitely had those conversations at a party, the funny and the serious ones so it was very relatable depiction of friendship groups. Well worth a watch.

I really wanted to love this, but left feeling super disappointed. Each character had so much potential but was restricted to conversations about their identity and felt more like caricatures of queerness rather than real people. What could’ve been a beautiful journey following a woman’s struggle with her identity was not a journey at all and nothing felt resolved or even properly explored. The writer was laughing at the jokes she wrote not realising they were enforcing harmful stereotypes and not dismantling them. I’m glad at least she enjoyed it though because as someone who is also a part of the queer community i left feeling the need to cry, and not in a good way.

Cherry is surely THE queer show of this year's Fringe. It's a completely natural insight into how young people (or any people) can be confused about their sexuality. The acting is fantastic across a sizable cast who give a multitude of both laugh-out-loud and hold-back-tears moments. The environment created makes you feel welcomed in, whether you are a member of the LGBTQ+ community, an ally, or just someone wanting to learn (and laugh!). Cherry is a joy for all.

Cherry is fantastic! I laughed (a lot), I cried (a little) and honestly learned so much from this show. It is a fantastic portrayal of being young and confused about your sexuality and even as someone years out of university, there were so many moments which I found poignant and relatable. The cast were fab and it was great fun seeing a show with a larger cast that allowed for lots of different dynamics and interactions, plus the dialogue was so natural and authentic. Great to see a story like this portrayed with such sensitivity and care - highly recommended!

This is an extremely well written show about young people discovering their gender identity but also relevant for anyone battling new feelings and needing support of non-judgmental friends. It is hilarious in places and serious in others and a must see for everyone at any stage of their queer awakening. Very natural and believably portrayed characters.

Fantastic performance for anyone who is struggling with their identity, feeling lost in their twenties or just wants a heartfelt story with brilliant acting. Add to your calender for a show brimming with warmth and acceptance that will make you feel part of a community, if only for an hour!

A lovely show. Whether you are struggling with your identity or not it will tug on your heart strings and make you feel less alone.

Cherry is well worth a visit. There were lots of characters packed into this short play. I wasn’t sure what to expect but found it witty and amusing but also learned a lot about these young people being queer. With a relatively large cast (for fringe) they were able to have lots of different interplays going on. Same as another reviewer, despite being twice the age of many of the audience, I did not feel out of place watching it. It was raucously funny at times but touching and heartfelt at others. A great show to check out if you’re confused about who you are but equally if you know who you are and want to see some great new writing.

This is a confident production from a talented team of young creatives - exploring themes of identity, sexuality and questioning, there is much here that resonated with the first-night audience. I found that, despite being twice the age of many people in the room, I didn't find the show alienating - there were points of reference I could relate to. There are genuinely very funny moments, with some great lines, as well as heartfelt and touching scenes. This is an important play, and I'm delighted that the opening night had a big crowd. If you've ever felt that you don't fit in with the world around you - check out this show.
