Description

'Hilarious, moving, provocative... extraordinary' **** (List). Pick of the Week at Adelaide Fringe Festival, 2024. Welcome. Welcome to The Ceremony. You're welcome. Thank you. Exploring ritual and tradition in the modern world, The Ceremony is experimental and interactive – part sermon, part group therapy, part comedy show (not a cult). Shaped entirely with the audience, the show is completely different every night. What's going on? Where are we? Who are we? Does this have a meaning? What does meaning mean? Hmm. Join me. Glorious, A master craftsperson. The way he got us to interact with him without him saying a word made me think I'm not as weird as I sometimes think I am! One of my highlights of the fringe.

Very enjoyable. We loved it. A fringe highlight.

Silly, but strangely poignant. A group of strangers, coming together with shared understanding and purpose as we stood for a solemn hymn to remember dinosaurs, used ChatGPT to write the rules of a ritual, and considered a new life buying a farm in the countryside.

Ben never spoke a word for the entire performance, yet expertly led us through the ceremony. We chanted. We stood and sat. We closed our eyes. It was funny, but reverent. And not a cult.

Your experience may (will!) differ.

Bizarrely wholesome experience where you get to be a part of a collaborative ritual. Recommended for those who enjoy audience interaction and little-to-no expectations on what might manifest from it.

Go see this show to experience an artist who is truly inspired and prompted by their audience. The Ceremony leaves room for everyone to be themselves in the midst of a semi structured ritual.

Ben is a conductor and the audience an orchestra. An absolute masterclass in audience participation, the type of show which works best late night at the Fringe. One of the best shows I’ve seen this year.

What is The Ceremony?
I was there tonight and still couldn’t tell you.
All I can say is that if you like to have fun and laugh, you absolutely have to go to this show!

This show relies heavily on audience participation and the more people who are involved, the better the show is.
But don’t be discouraged by that. You will be able to participate as much or as little as you want. Or even not at all if you don’t want to.

That’s what makes this show so unique, and there will never be one show that is like the next. Because it all depends on who we are and what we do together with the incredible conductor Ben Volchok.
Such a talent!
I am beyond impressed and am considering going back to see it again. That’s how good he was.

This show is the funniest thing I saw over the Edinburgh Fringe — it had my friends and I crying from laughter. Ben Volchok is a masterful performer who truly knows how to engage an audience. It is a must see!

With great skill, inevitable failure and a bit of inspiration from the internet, Ben Volchok weaves whatever he can find into the show

Most improv shows are hardly improv; they follow a fixed formula, and serve up variations on the same games each night. Ben Volchok’s The Ceremony is a noble exception
