Description

What if Bette Davis were a witch? In 2019, her evangelical daughter, BD Davis, claimed that her mother was filled with demonic forces that gave her power. Piper’s original musical set in 1975, tells the story of how Davis, saddled with bills for an infirm daughter, and now well past her prime, takes a job on the classic cult horror film Burnt Offerings. Following the unprofessional behaviour of pickled actor Oliver Reed, and the neurotic Karen Black, will she use her magical abilities for revenge or re-establish her power as the star of the picture?

It was good! I think I saw the word 'Bloody' in the title, "demonic forces" in the description, and thought this would be a gonzo 'Evil Dead'-style musical featuring Bette Davis on a roaring supernatural rampage across Hollywood. This is NOT that. It's more nuanced and much more respectful of Bette Davis's true life story.

Favorite musical comedy of Fringe 24 by far. Smart use of a small space. Creative choreography and stage craft with witch (which) craft. Catchy, witty, songs (not just singing dialogue) move the plot along. Crazy talented cast takes us back to the 70's for some groovy fast paced fun!

Sensational!

Definitely one of the highlights of the Fringe this year.

These guys fill a tiny room with so much talent.

Like previous reviewers, I will be singing "The Stewardess is Flying the Plane" for weeks to come.

This is definitely one to see, and this company is on my list to look out for in the future.

One of the best musicals I have ever seen at the Fringe! The absurd decadence of 70s Hollywood is brought to campy, colourful life by an incredibly gifted and enthusiastic cast. The direction and choreography imaginatively makes use of every inch of the tiny stage, though this show deserves to be seen at the biggest venue in the Fringe!

Delightfully weird, fast paced and genuinely interesting. Like listening to someone infodump about their niche interest, through slick choreography and catchy songs. All of the performers are great, giving their all, and it pays off. The cockroach sequence is sublime.

Small stage? BIG show! Incredibly catchy tunes (The Stewardess is Flying the Plane!), that dances its way through Bette Davis's life on, and off, the silver screen. Determined to save some grace, she dabbles in the occult--seemingly the only way to restrain a boozy Oliver Reed, convince Karen Black that art is a commitment-worthy devotion, remain true to her devoted acolyte, Don, and honor those, like her makeup artist, whose lives she's inspired. The Bloody Ballad of Bette Davis is rollicking good fun, jam-packed with song, dance, and notes about motherhood, art, and ageism. So loved it the first time I had to see it again.

Was Bette Davis *really* a witch, as her religious-cult-member daughter alleges? What *was* the deal with Bette's late-career appearance in the 1970s camp horror classic Burnt Offerings, co-starring Oliver Reed and Karen Black? This musical tells all, at brilliantly hilarious, break-neck, physical theater pace, and with tunes so catchy you'll be singing along by the final verses. An utterly absorbing and lusciously fun hour of theater!

"A crumpled love letter to seventies Hollywood put to song as the ensemble fill the stage with antics and anecdotes, behind her trademark sunglasses."

There is something so warmhearted about the show, and with the cast giving it their all, you can’t help let it cast a spell over you. Whether she was a witch or not, the Bloody Ballad of Bette Davis certainly conjures up some theatrical magic.
