Description

BirdWorld attend their inaugural Fringe run on the eve of releasing Nurture on Dugnad Records (Norway). With a set-up of cello, drums, kalimbas and percussion spanning alternative, electronic, Afro-Cuban and contemporary classical music, their field recordings form an integral part of their music, interweaving industrial and natural soundscapes. Highlights include a Union Chapel concert filmed and recorded by NTS Radio, an electronic film score commissioned by London Contemporary Orchestra and a performance at LSO St Luke’s Open Ear series recorded by BBC Radio 3. Nurture is a significant leap into a new intimate and lyrical musical realm.

I went into this show with quite a lot of enthusiasm, based on the blurb. I was looking forward to an experimental and rangy performance, with analog and digital instruments combining to perform rhythmic, melodic and textural elements. On paper, this is what BirdWorld delivered, but what was missing was everything else - the stuff that makes an experience enjoyable or interesting. The performers had very little concordance (they barely looked at each other; it felt like three uncoordinated performances happening simultaneously, bouncing around side-by-side), there was no emotional resonance, very little structure. I understand that the band has a history in aleatoric/improvisational performance, but my understanding was that these were pre-composed 'songs' (based on the band's introduction before they performed). At points, the bassist would perform meandering runs in one key, while the cellist was in another key altogether (and not in a way that felt jazzy, or musically interesting, or purposeful).

I know this review is very negative, but I think it's necessary to share what I experienced. The final track they performed felt the most embodied - I found myself wishing that the preceding 35 minutes were so well-composed. I hope the band are able to reflect and consider how they can better combine their considerable talents as individual musicians to communicate something valuable to an audience.

Not for me - 3 blokes self-indulging on stage.....
