Description
Dad's dead. Mum’s shagging his killer. Girlfriend's crazy. Then Dad’s ghost appears, crying for revenge. What else does one do but start killing? Antonio makes Hamlet look like a little b*tch. This rarely-performed Early Modern hidden gem from John Marston is batsh*t insane, featuring everything you'd expect from a Jacobethan revenge tragedy: feigned insanity, an evil duke, an all-knowing fool, a smoking-hot mum, a ghost dad, a sad girlfriend locked in prison, a plucky kid who’s definitely gonna get murdered, and, of course, cannibalism. 'Rude, crude, and theatrically unglued' (Rick Bowers). Please note that while all media gallery content is provided by verified members of the event, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society does not review or approve this content before it is posted. Highly recommend seeing this show, the tight knit ensemble have perfected a tragicomic in an easily digestible 60 minutes. Cogent and purposeful use of lighting and soundscaping compliments the minimal set. Blood, lust, and farce - what more could you want?

A roaring rowdy revenge romp! Villains beware, Antonio's ghost Dad demands retaliation. This rarely performed Shakespeare-esque tale is brought to bloody life by a terrifically talented troupe. Such fun to watch them immerse themselves in their multiple roles.

Wonderful opportunity to see a performance of this rarely staged play. Acted with great zest and all the required stage props (including a severed tongue).

Tightly produced intrigue and vengeance with committed cast that reads either as wildly accelerating blood-drenched melodrama or wickedly funny take-down of Hamlet (and revenge-driven tragedy in general). On second thought, maybe it’s both!
Minimalist staging with sparse but effective use of lighting and a subtle score means that the rare effects land with maximum impact (and splatter, he says, woefully reconsidering his decision to sit in the front side seat wearing a light shirt and docs), and while the language and heft of dialogue can occasionally obscure character intention, the direction and physical acting choices ensure it - and the audience - are never completely lost. Great stuff.

A funny, dramatic and oft times sensual play. It balanced the melodrama of Elizabethan theatre whilst also poking fun at some of its more extravagant and unusual elements. The language, while complex, was understood well by the actors and even if the dialogue is challenging, they make sure through great performances that you know everything that is happening. I would recommend for anyone, especially for people who think Hamlet is far too tame.
