Description

This original one-act comedy by Joel Smith reflects Samuel Beckett's work and themes. It centres on a single Beckett-type character, dealing with his life in the present, within his mother’s womb, and the one he is preparing to face in the vast world beyond. Apart from his struggles with the idea of his existence, he is forced to confront the overbearing presence of his mother and the constant clamour of the outside world, of which he is soon to be part of. Written and performed in the playful rhythm and style that is synonymous with Beckett's plays.

Soothingly off-putting.
In spirit of the source material and serious as well as honest in its performance. The play goes on for thirty minutes that felt more like 5 (which is the simplest and most honest form of praise). Being familiar with some of Beckett's work, it was just what I expected, but also still engaging and thought-provoking. Whoever likes Beckett will like this. If you don't know yet, whether you like Beckett or not: Becket himself, as well as this play, is not for everyone to like, but for everyone to try.
The simple (but all the more effective for it) costume and stage design compounded the effect of the writing without distracting from it.
The acting convincingly portrayed a Becket-type character in their dialectic, self-contradicting state.
A great new rendition of great Irish literature.

An absolute little gem of a show, highly recommend! Full disclosure; I am not a Beckett fan and was unsure of what to expect when I saw the title. This is something else entirely. Comic, poignant and quite profound. 30 minutes flew, a testament to the writing and the performance. Paddy was a joy to watch. Just a really seamless and polished piece.
A fringe highlight for me.

A beautiful homage to the great Beckett with supreb acting. It is pleasing to see that intellect is still sought and appreciated

I found this to be a genuinely original and thought provoking piece that was well designed. This sort of theatre should thrive at the fringe.

Well,no. He doesn’t say anything about an overbearing mother. He does complain about his anxieties about his existence but theres not enough development in the play to explain his character.
OK to see, his acting is great but the play needs more work.
