Description

Come revel in the oversized aspirations of Mychelle Colleary's genre-bending musical head-smash, a jazz-tinged autobiographical one-woman show recounting undiagnosed traumatic brain injury, too many prescribed drugs and a dearth of available therapeutic alternatives. Ambitious Underachiever is self-depreciating triumph of obstinately hacking the system despite a loss of self-worth, when society is telling you to just get over it. Includes original songs by Colleary herself alongside classic tunes by Sondheim, Chaplin, and Strayhorn.

Mychelle is a very talented singer who knows how to deliver with lots of textures and nuances. A beautiful voice and a beautiful story.

If you’re a fan a jazz standards and like to hang in the coolest bars in town, then get down to the Voodoo Rooms and chill to the sounds of Mychelle Colleary’s Ambitious Underachiever.
The show mixes old favourites with contemporary tunes, intercut with a kind of Down But Not Quite Out In LA tales of the jazz artists struggles to keep body and soul together… among bad boyfriends, pricey dentists and the joys and sorrows of having one’s own harem of guys.
The songs are sung to a backing track, rather than live musicians, but if you can get past that, then there’s much to love in this intimate lunch time review.

Wow. This to me was a masterclass in writing an autobiographical show, tackling some sensitive personal experiences but in a way that's so well balanced with the most delightful sense of humour, irony and lightheartedness - even though not everyone will have experienced the life events described in the show, I think almost everyone can relate to its main theme (which I won't spoil but let's just say "it's in the title'), and the way you put it into words helps us in the audience to also recognise those feelings in us, and maybe, in a way, accept them and feel better about them. This was my main consideration, then of course we have gorgeous songs performed with a gorgeous versatile badass voice! A wonderful songstress with a unique voice, but most importantly a powerful piece of autobiographical storytelling.
