Description

31 words. Two lives ruined. John can take or leave social media, until his tweet goes viral. Then the trolls attack. With his pride dented John seeks revenge, creating an alter-ego to expose his abusers, with devastating consequences. As John gets sucked deeper into his darker online world, his life quickly falls apart at the seams. A rollercoaster ride for anyone who’s ever posted online, Addict portrays the power and perils of the internet and the cloak of anonymity it gives those who spread toxicity and hate, making social media terrifyingly anti-social.

Along with 'Chaos That Has Been and Will No Doubt Return' my favourite show at the fringe. The best 4th wall breaking I've seen in a play - inspiring, invigorating, moving, captivating, terrifying.

Outstanding acting and script, the audience was completely absorbed and you could hear a pin drop, totally recommend!

Really enjoyed this play. Acting was superb, lots of character changes and accents, which were carried off effortlessly by Craig Barclay. Well-written and thought-provoking. Would highly recommend it. Well done!

Kathryn Martin 20 days ago

Craig Barclay demonstrates such a considerable acting ability he folds himself into any undertaken piece of work .He makes this play highly watchable and topical but the play in itself can be a tad over ambitious at times.

The first thing we saw at the fringe was @addicttheplay, a searing, moving and profoundly thought-provoking piece by Tony Voller and a stellar performance by Craig Barclay. So much to think about, so much to admire. If you have a chance, go: it’s breathtaking, brave and timely.

Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend: go see it!!

Wow this is what drama should be a brilliantly written and performed piece of theatre. The story of social media addiction takes you to unexpected places. We talked about it for hours. My show of the whole festival. Don’t miss !

It was the poster and brief description that made this show stand out for me, so took a chance and booked it.

What a fantastic show. Brilliantly written and directed and an incredible performance. I expected an ensemble piece but was met with a one man show and was incredibly impressed.

Highly recommend this show.

Great show. Acting was outstanding and brought this powerful, emotive and relatable story to life. Very thought provoking, touching on serious and relevant issues with just the right amount of humour. Craig Barclay did an amazing job of capturing it all and drawing the audience in along the way.

Wow, what a powerful piece of new writing. A captivating journey of events. Loved the storytelling by tour de force Craig Barclay whose seamless jump from character to character was skillful and so powerful. With a subject of online addiction, this thought provoking play is a must see at this year's Fringe!

First show of this year's Fringe visit and it set the bar very high. Tony Voller has written a very believable play about how addiction can cause a person's life to unravel. Craig Barclay is an immensely talented actor with an amazing range and holds the audience's attention throughout. Well worth seeing.

A one person show.... gripping, well acted and had us hooked from the beginning. A well written play about how addiction in any form can change lives.

A must see.

Addict is a superb show! Incredibly well written and beautifully acted! Craig captivates the audience all on his own. The writers have carefully balanced comedy with the severity of toxic masculinity. A must see!

Addict is fully engrossing, right from the very start! Brilliantly and cleverly written by Tony Voller, this play skilfully presents a powerful message, that whilst disturbing, is relatable and recognisable to anyone who has ever used social media…and felt the thrill of getting likes and affirmation of strangers. Craig Barclay is very effective at bringing the story to life, seamlessly transitioning between characters. A poignant, riveting and enjoyable piece, so relevant to our times. Kudos to the whole production team. Don’t miss this one!

Impeccably performed and brilliantly written, Addict is a unique show with its captivating story. Craig is outstanding, performing by himself but with the ability to carry the show and story along leaving you on the edge of your seat throughout.

Brilliant, poignant piece of new writing, and incredible acting tour de force; can't recommend highly enough!

Sam Jackson 35 days ago

Possibly the best Fringe show I've attended in the last few years. Superbly written and performed. Enthralling rollercoaster that I'm sure challenges everyone in the room in its own way. Would highly recommend.

Kenzie 35 days ago

Couldn’t recommend this show more! I went in knowing little about it and found myself quickly wrapped up in a story which deals with social media, morality and how online personas affect and engage with who we are in the ‘real’ world. Craig kept us on the edge of our seats and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since!

Phi B 35 days ago

This is a gem of new writing married to the perfect actor. Craig Barclay’s performance is both swaggering and subtle, visceral and vulnerable.

The building tension of a snowballing story will have you on the edge of your seat.

The direction is surefooted, and minimal props bring locations and characters to life. It’s well worth a look if you want a well-written and performed play for now. Bravo!

Poignant topic featuring a well written script and a very moving performance. Definitely worth a watch; it had me on the edge of my seat! Took me through the whole range of emotions from start to finish.

Fresh, modern and an excellent watch, but be wary of distressing themes of sexual assault and addiction.
