Description

31, single, and lives with his mother. Sounds like a catch? Join Lance on his quest to find "the one" during (yes, during) this stand-up show about Chinese culture, dating, mental health, aspiration and struggle through the lens of a first-generation Chinese immigrant family. Why is he still single? Is it the stereotypes? His personality? Does he just have high standards? 'He needs a real therapist' * (an Uber driver). 'What kind of man defames his family' * (His mother). 'Here are five asterisks' *****, 'One day he will be a *' (Himself). 'Disturbing' (Audience member).

Stand up comedy done right! Absolutely brilliant we all loved it

This is an excellent show. Lance said it was for immigrants, but it definitely wasn't just us laughing!

The subject matter is a mix of reflections on cultural stereotypes, poverty, and the effects thereof on dating. Lance is amazing at controlling the mood, with his deadpan delivery shifting from genuinely touching moments of emotion and darkness to devastatingly funny snark. This means that the show does provoke actual thought and feelings - it's not just lightweight fast food. But at the same time Lance never makes it feel maudlin or depressing, but takes away the bitterness with laughter and some very respectably improvised spontaneous interactions with the audience.

Well worth the suggested price and then some. Great fun.

Went into this show and came out with a so many laughs and realizations about the things “not talked about” within my own Chinese family. Lance Mao makes every person in the audience feel in on the joke, with his deadpanned deliveries, insane life story, and his genuine presence. One of the most honest pieces of comedy I’ve seen at this year’s fringe.

We weren't sure what to expect but we enjoyed the show. Lance was funny, and interacted with the audience bringing us into his story. At some points we weren't sure where it was going but he always bought it back in the end 8.5/10.
