This is possibly the best thing I have seen in this year's Fringe - totally engaging, funny, shocking and very moving. It's too late now for people to see it in Edinburgh, but do look out for it elsewhere, you definitely won't be disappointed.

Michael Kilroy 18 days ago

Shocked at how good this was - one of the best shows I've seen all fringe! Went into this without any more knowledge than the eye catching title and a recommendation to see it. Equal parts hilarious and genuinely touching, this is a must see for all ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Brilliant show. Go and see it - you will not be disappointed. The play is so well written - it is both funny and sad, often at the same time. And what a performance by Alex Hill as Billy. Just great.

Paul ONeill 24 days ago

Just brilliant -would highly recommend. one person holding your attention throughout as his story unfolds. What a great way to end our Fringe festival this week and easily the highlight.

Incredible writing and performance that left us engrossed in the story with a rollercoaster of emotions. Well done!

We weren't expecting this to be as brilliant as it was! Thought it'd be a comedy about football hooliganism but it was incredibly moving. Absolutely amazing that Alex can perform this day after day by himself. Five stars

Francesca Butler 25 days ago

Might be the best piece of theatre I’ve seen. Made me laugh a lot, made me cry a lot.

One of the best pieces of theatre full stop I’ve ever seen. Utterly captivating, true to life, constantly hilarious and deeply moving - the very best acting and writing the fringe has to offer. If you’re a match going football fan especially this will strike a chord that I’ve never felt matched in any art form. GO AND SEE THIS SHOW

Sue Tomlinson 25 days ago

Absolutely brilliant !! Funny engaging moving all rolled into a wonderfully energetic performance. I love a show which takes me by surprise and this is was my pick of the Fringe and as someone else said not a dry eye on the audience. Just loved it

Fun,loud, energetic but lots else besides in this excellently written and performed show. You don’t need to know football to appreciate this. Highly recommended

Philip Bryan 32 days ago

All those stars plastered on the posters are so well deserved. Brilliant show!

George 32 days ago

Very funny, intense, cohesive; this show is wonderfully written and even better acted!

Alex Camp 33 days ago

The title, hilarious as it is, doesn’t explain how heartfelt this play is, how deeply it runs with channels of heartbreak, addiction, friendship and loss. Come for the flare, stay for the story and Alex Hill’s incredibly dynamic performance (under direction from the ever-brilliant Sean Turner).

Honey Butler 34 days ago

Made me laugh. Made me cry. Brilliantly written and performed. Highly recommend.

An outstanding performance, energetic, funny, sad, hilarious, moving... best show we've seen at this years Fringe by a way, would 100% recommend taking a punt on this if you're wavering!

Why I Stuck a Flare Up My Arse for England is the best show I have seen at the Fringe so far this year. It is raw, honest, engaging, exciting, exposing, emotional, and a masterclass in how to deliver a one-man show that grips, entertains and even educates! Alex delivers the role with unwavering passion. His storytelling talent is exceptional and keeps you glued to your seats, eyes trained on him as he takes you on this visceral journey about football fanaticism and escapism. This play is going places, catch it while you can!

Helena Murphy 36 days ago

Wasn't fully sold on the title to be fair, but am so glad we took a chance and went to see this. Having never really understood football fanaticism, this explained it on a completely relatable level. I laughed, I cried, I loved it. Definitely recommend

A moving and hilarious performance that completely draws you in and makes you not want to leave your seat even when you’re desperate for the loo.

"Why I Stuck a Flare Up My Arse for England" is a powerful one-man show by Alex Hill, who both performs and writes. This play tackles suicide and football hooliganism with wit and sensitivity. Hill’s performance is both hilarious and moving, keeping you gripped from start to finish. This bold play is a must-see.

Oliver Bridgland 38 days ago

Every football fan could do with seeing this outstanding performance, highly relatable, this high energy show will keep you gripped from start to finish. At times the character makes you feel as if you are looking into a mirror trying to fit in with blokes who outside of the game you have little in common with. I'm extremely glad to have been able to watch this show and will be recommending to everyone I speak to over the next month.

Maya-Nika Bewley 39 days ago

This show is a masterclass. It’s the kind of show I could see again and again because the sheer amount of detail Alex has built into his performance is incredible. The story is varied, hilarious, incredibly moving and entertaining from start to finish, and I have already booked to see it again! 5 stars isn’t enough for this show!

Saskia Gonnissen 39 days ago

Watching a play about a guy who stuck a flare up his arse for England wasn’t on my bingo card this year, or any year for that matter - but this play is nothing short of a triumph!

Why I Stuck A Flare Up My Arse For England is an incredible play, brilliantly written and performed by Alex Hill. He masterfully blends the raw, boisterous energy of football fan culture with an earnest exploration of mental health and the importance of looking out for your mates. It's a rollercoaster of emotions, keeping you engaged from start to finish. The humour is sharp and the banter relentless, yet beneath the laughs, the story of struggles behind bravado doesn’t go unnoticed.

For those contemplating this play, hesitate no more—Alex’s superb solo performance is funny, energetic, and heartfelt, offering something for everyone, football fan or not. It’s an experience not to be missed!

Saw this today and didn't know what to expect by the title... have to say that it blew me away and I'll be booking again. Don't judge it by the absurd title, just go and experience it for yourself.

James King 39 days ago

Caught the second preview of this today and it's absolutely fantastic. Highly recommend that people book to see this one, it's a great way to spend your lunchtime!

Philip Goncalves 39 days ago

The best thing I’ve seen on stage. Alex’ performance is equally hilarious as it is though-provoking. A really talented man. Check it out if you get the chance.

Nick Sankar 39 days ago

This play more than just your regular old football story, it delves deep into the mindset of the pressures behind the life of a man who just wants to fit in in a world where peer pressure comes at you from all angles! Beautiful, innovative and thought provoking, don’t miss it!

Dan Telford 39 days ago

What a brilliant and funny show this is.

The performance of Alex is excellent. I was lucky enough to see this in London and loved every second of it.

If you get the chance. It’s a must see.

Billy Barrett 39 days ago

The best way to spend your lunchtime this August!
A magnificent performance from Alex Hill.
The story behind the infamous bum flare man of Euro 2020, isn’t something you’d have ever imagined being transformed into a play.
However, it was written fabulously. Incorporating typical British football culture mixed in with witty theatre references, tied in with a moving ending. Not only was the performance incredible but the writing also shows what an all-round great talent Mr Hill really is.
Three words to describe the show?
Relatable.
Engaging.
Mini-series??

Well done Alex.

Todd Bell 39 days ago

Absolutely insanely good show. Saw the final performance in Edinburgh last year and the second preview today and it's only gotten better which is saying something considering it was already incredible in the first place. Lead performer is an absolute talent and delivers a firecracker of a performance.

An absolute must watch at the Fringe this year. Cannot recommend enough!
