Description

One man’s journey to good mental health via a very bad idea. Fleeing suicidal thoughts and the obvious psychiatrist, in 2018 Matt booked himself into the single greatest arts festival on the planet. It’s not recommended by NICE. A musician with no theatrical experience found himself performing nightly with no preparation and no idea what he was doing. Weaving tales of how he got to and came back from the brink of suicide, this is the path taken from breakdown to talking publicly. Moves between a mix of heartfelt stories, self-deprecating humour and original songs.

I left genuinely curious - What did he say about mental illness?

What was, at first, entertaining became drab and boring. I came out unfortunately feeling as though my depression was worse. The music was fine, but the only thing that really stood on it’s own. McGuinness’ monologues quickly became waffle and drawl, and unfortunately met no real conclusion, let alone a strong lead back to the sole theme - mental health. He mentions during the show that he’d booked a space at the fringe before even knowing what he was going to plan; I suggest before returning again that he reviews again the content of this show.

I do not intend to say this to offend- there are simply too many white male performers who take space in front of audiences with skills that do little to qualify. Matt is confident, and clearly has decent funds to subsidise this hobby; I suggest that it stays as a hobby, and that he continues to work in private to polish his performance.

A masterfully crafted 45 minutes, really funny but also emotional and poetic. Left thoroughly entertained, recommended to all my friends - and you.

A show that every person that never had a mental problem should see. Goreous!
