Opera Allegra's chamber version of Verdi's popular opera La Traviata uses just three voices with piano but has a contemporary twist. The two lovers, Violetta Valery (soprano) and Alfredo Germont (tenor), remain the same but the role of the father is flipped to become that of his mother (mezzo-soprano). This powerful re-imagining sees Mother Germont with a past not unlike Violetta's – thus sympathetic to her situation – but nevertheless determined her family should remain socially acceptable. The psychological drama is intensely depicted in this fully-staged adaptation, sung in Italian with English surtitles.
