Description

Discover this iconic Flemish play by Cyriel Buysse. Through the lens of a story set in 1903, it dissects our Western world where, to this day, classes and communities don’t speak the same language, and where oppression by the one percent has resulted in a fierce social struggle. These past 12 years, Dhaenens has travelled the world with the hit monologues BigmoutH and SmallWaR. In his latest show, Dhaenens recreates a major Flemish theatre classic by seamlessly slipping into 13 different characters to engage in a dialogue with as many digital individuals.

★★★★★

THE GOOD
* Solo Show Innovation. One performer takes on all roles with the clever use of projections, magnifying character presence, often quite literally.
* Universal Sentiments. After 100 years the realities of Belgian peasant life still resonate.
* Subtitles Incorporated. They didn't just translate; they added texture to the narrative.

THE NOT SO GOOD
* Peaked in the Middle. Adjustments could be made to maintain momentum till the end.
* An Acquired Taste. Seasoned theatre-goers will likely appreciate more. I loved it.

Absolutely stunning. Aside from the historical interest of seeing a very early 20th century play that I'd be unlikely to encounter, the sole performer does a brilliant job with a wide variety of characters, whether he is playing them live on stage or in the filmed segments. Impossible to explain in a brief review the brilliant use of film, but I have never seen anything like this. Ivo van Hove and his partner should take a look at this, given their seeming obsession with using video, even when it simply distracts or detracts. Absolutely one of the highlights of the festival for me.

This was a fantastic performance. The staging was so creative. I really enjoyed the thoughtful pacing, the classic yet timely story—everything. Thought provoking and enjoyable.
