Tales from the Garden is a play about being a young woman, not knowing your place, being broken, trying to fix yourself, being haunted, being stolen, being free, asking God to help you, trying to help yourself, hiding, running, sewing, screaming, hoping. In her first one-woman show, Ameera Conrad explores the joys and traumas of being a young woman raised in a world that makes women targets for aggression and violence. This play explores the tension of consent, guilt, fear, and love, and questions what the repercussions are of having to deal with trauma alone.

Go and see this show. Beautifully acted, moving and ultimately mildly cathartic despite a gruelling subject. Highly recommended, one of the best pieces of thoughtful theatre we’ve seen.

This was a real Fringe find! From the symbolic opening, Ameera sitting with the mask of newspaper roses across her eyes and a real rose held in her mouth, we are enthralled by the poetic writing and subtle, nuanced performance. Each moment feels tightly held and the layers of metaphor build to a crescendo of a harrowing tale of abuse and rape culture. With a small audience, Ameera held the energy of the room in her touching play that drew on themes of the blame and teaching of sexuality for young girls that is passed through generations to the shame and continued guilt of the hidden crime. A cyclical structure, it is a strong and thought-provoking piece that is worth seeing, be warned that you may need some time to breathe and re-centre yourself after this performance.

While tending a garden tray on stage, a young woman from South Africa tells of an ugly sexual experience on her trip to London and dealing with its aftermath. While her experience was dire, it closely followed the path of many other such shows at the Fringe with little new to recommend it. The opening scene has her claw rose petals from her mouth which, though symbolic, seems incongruous with the jaunty attitude she immediately assumes afterwards.

A beautiful account of storytelling. Whilst being poignant, it was also entertaining and attention was held throughout even though it was a one-woman show. The ability of the actress to switch between emotions so quickly was impressive.
