Description

After a string of five-star sell-out Fringe productions, EUSOG is thrilled to present their latest Edinburgh Fringe show: Sweet Charity! The story follows Charity Hope Valentine, an eternal optimist determined to find a better life for herself. However, Charity has been strung along in a series of bad relationships because she persistently falls hopelessly in love with the first person she meets. Featuring iconic songs such as Big Spender and The Rhythm of Life, this musical highlights the value of looking on the bright side, no matter the circumstances.

An impressive college production with lots of singing and comedic talent, creative use of minimal Fringe scenic props, and excellent musicianship. (Cy Coleman music is all about rhythm, and the band nailed it.) American accents good enough that I usually couldn't tell whether or not they were real. The cast made the characters (appropriately) broad while keeping them authentic enough to earn our sympathy. The lead was endearing and the actor playing Oscar created an interpretation that balanced a heartfelt quality with a this-guy's-kind-of-"off" vibe.

What a brilliant show put on by the multi-talented students of Edinburgh Uni....excellent singing and dancing. Actress who played Charity was like a west end professional. Niamh Higgins as musical director kept the whole performance immaculately timed and in step with the performers.

If your idea of a fun evening at the Fringe consists of an amusing, light-hearted show that combines music with comedy and romance, Sweet Charity is well-worth your time. While EUSOG’s production may not be as polished as it could be, these moments of messiness do not fully detract from the amusement of the show but instead, add to the overall charm of Charity’s story.
