Description

Three siblings. A kitchen. A box of cassette tapes left by their mother. On them, titles for every chapter of her life. Together, the siblings engage in a ritual game of make-believe. As they uncover the reality behind their mother's veneer, an absurd dystopian world emerges where kitchen appliances become people – the perfect dysfunctional family resurrected. Will they get out of the kitchen, or is it too much too late? A form-pushing new play by Nadia Cavelle, Subject Mater is a loosely autobiographical, daringly imaginative journey into the mother/child relationship and what it takes to break free.

This feels like a discovery. Performed on the tiniest of stages in front of three rows of seats, Nadia Cavelle’s three-hander is an exquisite example of what an inventive Fringe company can do with minimal resources. It's elegantly presented, precisely perfor...

A theatrical ode to a vivacious, egocentric Frenchwoman and mother, who fills a kitchen with romance, this semi-autobiographical show, written and co-performed by Nadia Cavelle, is as delicious as the peaches being chopped in its chic on-stage kitchen...
