Description

SYBMAP? is a lecture-performance that investigates Faizal's Muslim-Malay-Singaporean identity and his relationship with each noun, especially the latter two. A love letter to Singapore, it addresses themes of colonisation, identity, indigenous displacement, and the loss of culture, heritage and language. As he teaches the audience about himself and the country that he still considers home, he explores what it truly means to be 'Singaporean' and 'Malay'. Recipient of Eclipse Award 2023. Nominated for Show of The Week at VAULT Festival 2023 and OFFFest 2023 (OFFIES).

An insightful portrayal into the struggle of being caught between cultures and the dilemmas faced by Malays in Singapore. Exploring these ideas through language creates an experience that is both thought-provoking and enjoyable - completely captivated by Faizal's aesthetic engagement of the Malay poems!

What an absolute joy to see. Funny, moving and yet also with a serious message to impart. What a talented performer and producer - I look forward to seeing what they do next!

Faizal's heartfelt tribute to the Malay culture and language in Singapore is as educational as inspiring. He's a gifted storyteller and the show is a well-polished labour of love that shouldn't be missed.
