Description

‘Two cousins unalike in dignity, in fair Verona where we lay our scene…’ In 1596, courtship is complicated. Rosaline has been dumped, Juliet is in love, and it’s unclear who has it worse. When events at the Capulet Ball set fate in motion, Ros and Ju must navigate accidental murders, love triangles and the peaks and pits of female friendship. A new take on Shakespeare’s love story; how far will Rosaline and Juliet go in the pursuit of happily ever after? 3 scenes, 2 women, 1 impossible situation. A love story, but not the one you think.

Rosaline and Juliet by Lara Lawman and Lily Roberts takes a sideways look at the story of Shakespeare's star crossed lovers. The writers have brought to life Rosaline, Juliet's cousin in Shakespeare's text, re-imagined as her closest friend. Can she help Juliet navigate the course of true love and avoid disaster? Well possibly, but what if Rosaline has also be enchanted by roving Romeo? In an action and emotionally packed twenty minutes Lawman and Roberts blow the stage apart with writing that is fresh, sharp and bursting with humour one minute and tragedy the next. Their performances are nuanced and carefully crafted. Had this production been at the Traverse, Summerhall or Assembly and more visible to reviewers they might well have had a string of awards.
The production was only on for the first week of the Fringe, it should be seen again and again!

A highly amusing and well-grounded show that will very worthily fill your 20 minutes – but get in there quickly: the run finishes on the 11th!
