Description

Based on the award-winning young adult novel by Sonia Manzano and including original music and songs by Sartje Pickett, this new play by Tlaloc Rivas tells the story of Evelyn, a young Latinx girl keeping two secrets from her family – her true feelings about growing up in Spanish Harlem, and her attitude about her grandmother who’s come from Puerto Rico to live with them. But through a series of events as sudden as an earthquake, Evelyn learns important truths about her Latinx identity, her family and the history-makers who shaped the Nuyorican identity forever.

I loved this show for a few reasons:

1. I was exposed to a bit of history that was new to me - it's very interesting to learn about the Young Lords, and their impact on the Puerto Rican community in NYC
2. I was infected with the spirit of the ensemble through the storytelling
3. The sounds! The music. The language. So authentic and so full of life.

What a wonderfully uplifting journey, told be a stunning cast with simplicity, heart & soul. Bravo!

It's a particular shame this show by the Los Rivax Project couldn't be seen live in Edinburgh, because it would go down a treat with its skittering Latin rhythms and gorgeous harmonies.
