An original musical composed by Annie Scalmanini, an Apple engineer straight out of the Silicon Valley pressure cooker. Come follow Myrah as she chases game-changing Quantum computing in the high-stakes start-up world. Her new colleague Jacq tries everything from persuasion to sabotage to block her, and with good reason. The women collide and bond as they’re orbited by their boss, the almost-professor Nathan, his seen-it-all lab tech of twenty years Will, and Myrah’s coworker and boyfriend Kiran, who’s side-eyeing it all. When everything is on the line, what do you lose even when you win?

I want to see this in full length. For the hour-long cut if the piece, or still felt complete: The musical style fits both with the speed of the Silicon Valley theme as well as the Bay Area geographical culture and history (unlike other musicals in development at the Fringe that didn’t quite manage to get their genre to match their story). The lyrics were clearly given time and thought and patient editing (so I wasn’t left distracted by easy rhymes that live nothing of the story forward). And the characters are real and, in a full-length production, will carry the emotion of the plot and story even more completely.

Really good musicals match the style of music to the story being told, and that's exactly what Quantum does in this concert version of what will hopefully be a very entertaining full production. The fast-paced electronic R&B/hip hop perfectly suits the frenetic world of the tech industry, where pushing deadlines & releasing product are more important than worrying about the consequences of your actions. Not only that, but the music & lyrics are extremely well-crafted, and wouldn't be out of place on an album by Rihanna or Beyonce.

It's an ambitious project, interweaving cutting-edge AI technology, personal drama, the NSA, and a dash of #MeToo to boot, and in this hour-long version, the songs are mostly linked by exposition / narration, but the music is banging and the lyrics are finely honed; a full version could be spectacular. See it now before it takes Broadway by storm!
