Description
Purgatorio follows an ensemble of troubled spirits dancing to salvation in Club Purgatorio, a surrealist techno dreamscape. Inspired by Dante Alighieri’s Divina Commedia and developed in Tuscany, this devised physical theatre piece explores desire, dependency and divinity through ecstatic movement. It invites the audience to press where it hurts, live their darkest fantasies and then to dance it off after. Please note that while all media gallery content is provided by verified members of the event, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society does not review or approve this content before it is posted. Truly spectacular. Immediately intriguing and constantly compelling, the show draws you into a place you can only pray you'd never visit - and yet somewhere that you fear you somehow might.
Intense movement and barbaric sequences throw you into the deep end with a handful of characters who you get to know quickly. Each performer brings life to their part and to this terrifying world, in a way that you find yourself holding your breath in anticipation of what comes next.
Is it a commentary on the life and times of the struck down angels who then came to rule the realms below? Is it a story of power and leadership in an age where media tells us what to think? Or perhaps a narrative on finding your true, queer self? All of them? None of them? The story gives so much and just little enough that it can be whatever you need for it to be. A masterpiece in ambiguity, and yet somehow a lesson in character development.
On a more personal note, my favourite forms of media is that which can make me feel intense and strong emotions. This piece left me in a daze and left me feeling any and every kind of feeling imaginable. Perhaps the best piece of theatre I have ever seen.
The show is thought empowering, and the incredible direction alongside a group of spectacular actors help form a truly phenomenal way to spend an hour and a quarter at Fringe.

This show is worth the ticket! A trope of young performers explore themes of grief and loss and combine it with choreographed numbers and a soundtrack that will enchant you. They may be young but the charisma from this group makes it worth the money!

This show effectively evokes the nature of human-made suffering and joy. This is facilitated by a high degree of dramatic courage and chemistry achieved by the troupe. Brav!!
