Description

Ludmilla Dabo, accompanied by Moliere award-winning writer, director and musician David Lescot, sings a moving, intimate and dazzling portrait of the iconic ‘High Priestess of Soul’, Nina Simone. Through the legendary singer’s music and life story, intertwined with personal stories from Dabo’s own life, Dabo charts Simone’s journey from young musical prodigy to her role as a major figure in the civil rights movement. A unique performance fusing jazz, soul and storytelling. Dabo is ‘Nina Simone reincarnated… A talent that explodes’ (Le Monde).

This show started 10 minutes late and then overran by another 20 minutes. Unforgivable. Ludmilla had a great voice but not enough singing and too much incomprehensible dialogue. For some reason they made Ludmilla have a costume change in full view of the audience. Disappointing.

Portrait of Ludmilla as Nina Simone (***)
With an accompanying guitarist, Ludmilla covers bits and pieces of Simone’s life while spending the bulk of the time reprising her songs. While I enjoyed some of her songs, with my poor hearing I had great difficulty understanding what she was saying between songs. The “hour” show committed the unforgiveable sin of running twenty minutes past its expected end time.

This is the 55th most enjoyable of the 84 shows I have seen so far at the Fringe this year. I hope to see almost 200. You may see my other three-sentence reviews, in order from most enjoyable to worst, at my non-commercial website: https://fringefan.com/

Touching and thoughtful biographical play beautifully intertwined with personal reflections/connections with the artist. Loved the singing as well. Recommend highly!
