Description

First commissioned for the Verve Poetry Festival, Playground is a full-length poetry and spoken word show that captures the sounds and experiences of growing up alongside friends and strangers. Featuring performers who went to school in four different countries, Playground highlights not just how universal some of those experiences are but also how adult life features its own kind of playground dynamics: camaraderie, isolation, reprieve and much, much more. The Second City Poets are award-winning writers and performers who first met at the University of Birmingham. In 2018 and '19 their members won the national competition, UniSlam.

'Playground' is a wee Fringe gem- a small show by a group of four poets, what it lacks in flashiness it makes up for in bounds with heart. The four writers & performers are talented wordsmiths who weave in and out of snapshots about the aches of growing up. Each with their own issues, each finding connections with each other and losing them again. The more intricate group pieces in particular beautifully mirror the storytelling, showing great skill and innovation in how to tell a tale. There's moments of sad nostalgia, but always balanced with big laughs. A must see for fans of modern poetry and intriguing storytelling!

Excellent show - creative, entertaining and moving. Some really interesting use of multiple voices.
