On a normal bed, in a normal bedroom, two normal university students try to figure out their place in the world – and their place in each other’s lives. They’ve known each other since they were 15. They’re pretty sure of that. But they’re on the brink of adulthood now – life changes and there’s so much that should have been said long ago. A single conversation that drifts between love, sex, Bowie, break-ups and Adam Sandler, Pillows is a new one-act play that wanders through the murky depths of teenage love without leaving one boy’s bedroom.

  • Would like to book specific accessibility services, e.g. a hearing loop, audio description headsets, captioning units, seating in relation to the location of the BSL interpreter

  • Requires a complimentary personal assistant ticket to attend a performance

This is excellent, an example of communication, conflict and the turbulence of commitment.
The performance is electrifying. If you haven’t seen it get your tickets quickly. There will be others wanting to watch it again.

I loved this. A rollercoaster kaleidoscope script of brutal intimacy and farcical familiarity, delivered by two dynamic, entertaining actors displaying honesty and humour. Go see it.

Having seen a run of bad and so-so shows, this unexpected find has put the spark back into the Fringe for me. Sam Adlam’s writing is pin-sharp, and performers Eve Billington and Aaron Garland bring it to life vividly with their quickfire repartee.

Every line is a cue. That may seem obvious, this being a two-hander, but many of the lines are very short. Adlam, who also directed, admits in the programme that it was ‘a bitch of a script to learn’.

But these actors have not only nailed their lines, they’ve owned them. They inhabit their roles so well that we’re drawn, swiftly and deeply, into the claustrophobic world of their troubled relationship.

This particular pillow-talk has a sexual frankness that pushes way beyond the prurient interest many plays of this type are doomed to arouse. That’s because the sex itself is not the focus.

Intimacy is; both its extent and its limits. That’s why we get a brilliant riff on the variable quality of Adam Sandler movies in the middle of an emotionally-charged stand-off.

There are ambiguities and misunderstandings, weaponised backstories, assertions, expletives and apologies. The drama is very funny one moment and breathtakingly sad the next. In short, it’s very human.

My star-ratings have always gone from one (poor) to four (excellent), but in the arts, as in life, there are times when you have to be flexible and listen hard to what someone else is saying.

If you want to believe there’s a future for original, one-off plays performed live, don’t miss this little gem. It’s on at theSpace on North Bridge until 27 August (excluding 21 August).

A hidden gem of a play. The fringe can be quite a chaotic place with many options so it’s hard to know what’s worth your time but this really cuts through the noise. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality, being a student play. Both actors (Eve and Aaron) deliver a high quality performance - a true bargain for the price of admission. I would highly recommend this play, and will be back to attend later in the week. Bravo
