Following a sell-out 2017 run, Phil ‘Philly Philly Wang Wang’ Wang is back with a new hour of absolute gold. Phil has made a name for himself (that name being Phil Wang) exploring sex, romance, politics and his mixed British-Malaysian heritage, in shows that delight in his unique Wang brand of smart/silly stupidity. This one is about morality and the modern sense of self. Swell! As seen on Have I Got News for You, Live at the Apollo and Taskmaster. ‘This is intoxicating stuff’ **** (Telegraph). ’Stand-up dreamland’ **** (Guardian).

No wonder Phil Wang strolls on stage looking like the cat who got the comedy cream. The star of Taskmaster and panel show and Radio 4 regular sold out his entire Fringe run before it even began. He tells us that he identifies as 'white Chinese' which, by his...

The Guardian (4/5 stars) 120 days ago

Phil Wang made a little piece of fringe history this year before the festival even began, when he sold out in advance his entire run in the Pleasance’s Cabaret bar. You can see why he’s popular: the new show – his first since 2017’s terrific Kinabalu – is high-end standup...

...this (by his own, cherishable description) "half Chinese-Malaysian, half normal" young stand-up in fact applies his very considerable wit and intelligence to all manner of ultra-serious topics: male vs female contraception, virtue-signalling on social media, sexual predation, and so on.

Phil Wang loves a cork in his balls. Like a ritornello in a piece of Baroque music, Wang returns to this line throughout the show, an idea introduced in a bit about contraception he uses to jump to musings on sex, gender equality and personal morality. Philly Philly Wang Wang, though less focussed than his previous show Kinabalu, is still a finely constructed piece of stand-up.

Who is Phil Wang? It’s not always easy to clear a path through this debonairly geeky comedian’s mix of frankness and facetiousness. Still, his reputation as a stand-up, as the brainy one from the sketch group Daphne or as the star of a viral online video in which he edited...

Chortle (3.5/5 stars) 130 days ago

On the strength of a very successful year, Phil Wang joined the very exclusive club of comedians who sold out their entire Fringe run before the festival even began. In the past 12 months, his brand of dry wit has led his own Radio 4 special, made him a memorable Taskmaster...

Phil Wang needs this more than us, or so he tells the packed Pleasance venue he’s playing this year. Just as well he’s sold out his regular festival run this year, and even added an extra date in a much larger venue. How much do we need his new show...
