Description

'I thought this Earth was dead, no stirring life, a pile of tinkering bones. All it takes is a seed, a seed, one single seed.' A world premiere and writing debut of actor-creator Isabelle Woolley, Persephone is a story of a young woman plunged by Fate into the Underworld of her mind. As the threads of her relationships and identity unravel around her, the audience will witness a grief-filled transformation. A reimagining of the myth of Persephone, this one-woman play explores the journey of maidenhood to self-actualised woman through story and poetry.

a genuinely moving performance it had me chuckling one moment then with the next breath I was stunned into silence and the next I was crying. I could not recommend this enough. To Isabelle, thank you.

Persephone @ Greenside tore us from our comfy lives and plunged us into the deep, earthy, root-tangled distress of this poor child as she struggles to carry her load.
There was absolute stillness and stunned incredulity during the brave, in-your-face scene where Persephone confronts her demons. We had never seen anything like it.
Controlled choreography, varied pace and sustained eye-contact ensured we stayed with her, never looking away. Links between ancient mythology and contemporary stresses drove home the universality of Persephone's estrangement. She confided in us and she grew in strength.
Isabelle Woolley is one to watch. Her production crew worked with her, using music, lighting, ritualistic movement and prolonged silences to create an otherworldly, an underworldy aura to the piece.
If I wasn't home in Cumbria, I'd go again.

A wonderfully crafted and acted piece, weaving elements of the Persephone/Proserpine myth into a disturbing story of discovery and loss. The defining moment is a piece of physical theatre you won't forget. Do take a look.

PS. If you read the Edinburgh Guide review posted under "Professional Reviews' you might work out that I'm the director's Dad. Despite that, my review honestly reflects my views!
