Description

An Edinburgh Fringe hit of 2016 and 2017, My Leonard Cohen also sold out the Sydney Opera House and Adelaide Fringe. D'Arrietta and his band return with their rousing celebration of the late, legendary Cohen. Arresting and imaginative arrangements of Cohen's best work, punctuated with poetic anecdotes, give insight into the great musician's life. The heartrending Suzanne, desperately sensual I'm Your Man and iconic Hallelujah are some of the many songs given the D'Arrietta treatment. '... not to be missed' ***** (DailyBusiness.co.uk). 'Surpasses mere imitation' ***** (Advertiser, Adelaide). 'Magic. 10/10' (The Adelaide Show Podcast).

Most disappointing. Did not realise how many Leonard Cohen songs could be shouted through! No subtlety at all but the backing group did ok.

An absolutely brilliant show from a special talent with amazing musicians. I loved his take on the work of Leonard Cohen - it gave the songs new life.
I enjoyed the show immensely. 5 star entertainment.

The worst in every possible way—loud and brassy music, terrible voice, ruined Leonard’s songs, flippant singer channeling Crocodile Dundee while screaming Leonard’s lyrics. I tried to figure a way out after the first song but alas I had to stay to the end covering my ears the entire time. Don’t waste your time and money.

A performance which can only be described as a desperately poor pastiche of Joe Cocker shouting the songs of Leonard Cohen at the top of his voice. No subtlety, nuance, gentleness. Great songs destroyed. O, and a gratuitous monologue about Scottish independence thrown in as well. From an Australian.

If you like Jerry Lee Lewis impersonating Acker Bilk impersonating Louis Armstrong singing Leonard Cohen songs you might like this show. Poor sound quality and complete lack of nuance and subtlety. Best avoided if you're a Leonard Cohen fan.

Fantastic performance last night. His take on Leonard Cohen songs is masterful, bringing something new to the equation. His supporting band are fantastic..

My Leonard Cohen (***)
Backed by a band of four, singer/pianist Stuart D’Arrietta looks and sounds like Cohen as he tells of Cohen’s life and sings many of his songs. Though I was never a big fan of Cohen, hearing of the origins of each song, particularly that of his ode to Jewish concentration camp death march bands, added a lot of power to them. Though the performance was often louder than I like, there were times that the driving rhythms seemed a perfect fit to the voice and sentiment of Cohen/D’Arrietta.

This was the 19th most enjoyable of the 43 shows I have seen so far this year. You may see my other three-sentence reviews, in order from most enjoyable to worst, at my non-commercial website: www.fringefan.com.

Caught this show at the Edinburgh Festival last night. Great performance from someone who clearly loves the songs. They don't sound like the originals. They have a more upbeat tempo which seems to add rather than take anything away. The band is great and the chat and poems are touching. Really enjoyed it. The only negative is that being the festival it was a strict one hour show.

It certainly wasn’t my Leonard Cohen. I was looking forward to introducing my daughter to the depth and subtlety of Cohen’s lyrics but subtle this was not: Crushed under a sledgehammer of noisy glam rock arrangements, occasionally cringeworthy delivery and poor sound engineering the words were impossible to comprehend for those who didn’t know them already. Whatever alternative musical interpretation of his songs one might favour at the very least it should pay tribute to the fact that Cohen was a great writer and poet first and foremost. Cohen-lovers, be warned.
