Description

At the heart of Molière’s extreme, comic farce, is the story of Henriette and Clitandre, who are in love. But to marry, they must overcome the attitude of Henriette's family. Her sensible father and uncle are in favour of the marriage, but unfortunately her father is under the thumb of his overbearing wife, Philaminte. Philaminte, supported by Henriette's aunt and sister, wishes her to marry Trissotin, a "scholar", a foppish wit imposter, who has these three women completely under his spell. For these three ladies are "learned".

A magnificent production, the costumes are a visual spectacle perfectly complementing the performances which are played just right with some excellent casting, the pompous and overbearing Philaminte, played by Uma Misha, my favourite, if I had to single any one out from among these talented and consummate players.

This show gets 5/5 stars! The students are so fully committed to their roles and as a result the colorful nature of each character is brought to life with every performance.

This show is a welcome breath of fresh air, mainly because the costuming and acting are the perfect mix of whimsical and camp necessary to elevate the dated text. In other words, don’t let any preconceived notions the structural sexism of the play dissuade you from coming - these kids will make you laugh out loud at their witty adaptation. Five stars!

The Learned Ladies is a hilarious and thought-provoking show, poking fun at fatuous fools. The performers completely commit to their colorful characters, especially Uma Misha as Philaminte. The over-the-top costumes, wigs, and make up reinforces the performances. It was exactly what Fringe was created to do: provide a opportunity for unknown performers to thrill and delight its audience.
