Description

With nothing but the titular suitcase, a trench coat and a scarf, this true story centers on questions of identity, immigration, women's rights and involuntary displacement in a humorous and heartfelt portrayal of 27 characters in four languages. A tour de force performed in English, Spanish, French and Persian with English supertitles, Mimi's Suitcase is a universal coming-of-age story of resilience and hope at once relevant, vibrant and authentic. Mimi's Suitcase premiered in NYC in 2015 as a bestseller at United Solo Festival and went on to win the Audience Choice Award for Best Play at Kulturverein Boje in Heidelberg, Garmany.

Ana Bayat brings an enormous talent and charisma to the stage and screen. Mimi’s Suitcase is a polyglot, one-woman wonder. At turns poignant and hilarious, this timely show engages the audience with the particular story of a life in and away from Iran, as well as the universal story of human displacement and artistic expression.

Set in 1980s Tehran, the play informs our understanding of that time as well as of today, as Iran continues to arbitrarily detain filmmakers, human rights advocates, journalists, and others.

Watching this remarkable play as Kabul, Afghanistan, falls and tens of thousands of intellectuals, translators, rights advocates, and other civilians are in danger is an unforgettable experience.

Mimi’s Suitcase is a fine example of how one life story can illuminate a world. It is an extraordinary contribution to the arts.

Mimi’s Suitcase is a piece of work which deftly balances moments of humour with the realisation that ‘home’ is not the place you can necessarily be yourself.
