Description

New York, dancing and growing up. A brand-new adaptation that mixes stark alienation with Python-esque humour and original music, this is for fans of laughing, writing and refusing to ignore your own value. The cast is made up of pupils from Ruislip High School in their first venture to the Fringe. This is a fast-paced and non-linear approach to a favourite text that will have audiences unsure whether to laugh or cry, for myriad reasons. Joyful, anachronistic, warm and constantly irreverent. We are not afraid of storms – for we are learning how to sail our ship.

What a wonderful show to see performed by a very talented bunch of young people. Such a great opportunity for them and all credit to the teachers and Ruislip High School who made this possible. Hope to see them being their next show next year.

I absolutely loved this show -first class performances from all the young actors. It was a pleasure to watch them delivering their interpretation of this well-known classic in such a polished and confident manner. I applaud them all and many congratulations to the members of staff involved-what lucky youngsters to have been given this opportunity!

Fantastic adaptation of this story, beautifully performed by all the actors to an excellent standard. We all thoroughly enjoyed watching this play especially given the age of the performers. This was better than shows we saw yesterday performed by adults! Well done to you all, you should feel incredibly proud.

This was a really good show and such a great way to start a day at the fringe. To get on any stage as a school student is very brave and these students did so with enthusiasm and talent. Some of the performers in particular had a huge amount of presence. A very funny and heartwarming show to start the day.

I took a chance on watching this on Wednesday morning, as the story is one of my favourite books. Condensing it into an hour is tough work, but I think the performers all did an incredible job! Some of the talent on show, considering the performers were so young, was impressive. I thoroughly enjoyed the adaptation and I hope each of the students are proud of themselves.

I can't understand why teachers would book slots in the most famous theatre festival in the world for shows that are so woefully unprepared. Yes, the Fringe is a wonderful place to try out your new amateur shows, but for people who have something to say and something new to bring. This was not it. This was just a terrible adaptation of a beloved story that has been done so much better hundreds of times before. What is the point here ? What story is it trying to tell ?! By rushing through so much content in one hour and picking all the wrong parts to adapt, you end up with the stage equivalent of a wikipedia book summary, but you lose every single thing that endeared the story to millions of readers. It loses all the important themes and messages, make the characters and relationships impossible to understand, in one word : script-wise, it couldn't have been worst. Directing-wise, it was simple to the point of boring. Acting wise, well, I don't really care about seeing other people's kids in their end of the year plays.
My heart broke for how defeated those kids looked when they realised half the room had left mid-show, and it's all the director/teacher's fault for setting them up for failure like that. I hope they don't blame themselves, because a few of them had potential but even the best actors couldn't do anything tangible with that script. There are so many innovating, wonderful amateur and professional shows to see at the fringe, and even some student/high school plays that have blow my mind away, that I genuinely feel cheated and robbed for wasting precious money and time on this play that has zero theatrical interest to anyone who is not a parent of one of those kids when I could have been seeing something else.
