Description

Black Ulysses awakens on an exotic island where he seeks refuge from a society rife with gun violence and oppression. Loosely inspired by Walt Disney's The Jungle Book, Joseph Campbell's Hero Mythology, Romaire Bearden's Black Odyssey and Harlem Renaissance art, this one-person hip-hop mashup of lyrical poetry and live music comments on the Black experience in America. Recently honoured Off-Broadway, at San Diego Fringe, New Zealand Fringe and the Kennedy Center, this tour-de-force update on Homer's epic tale dives into the healing power of community through fantasy, myth, creativity and escape.

This show is unmissable. Austin Dean Ashford is a triple threat- raps beautifully and powerfully, a wonderful story teller and super energetic and positive on stage. Lots of deep and important messages in his show but also keeps it hilarious and fun at the same time. Super talented and a brilliant show.

Sassy lobsters, wise cheaters and sadistic snakes: this quirky and eclectic retelling of ‘The Odyssey’ sees one man’s quest across an island, racing against the clock to reach the mountain top. Austin Dean Ashford’s skilled multi-rolling and distinct characterisation (particularly the personification of many animals) creates some exciting nuances in...
