Description

This multimedia theatrical experience explores an old Istanbul mansion’s transition from Ottoman to modern eras, through video art and traditional Turkish music, live looping and foley, accompanying a retake on traditional Turkish storytelling techniques. The play is based on creator Yesim Ozsoy's family history. Galata Perform, an award-winning Istanbul-based theatre company working internationally, produced this play as part of a multinational co-production for War or Peace Festival at Maxim Gorki Theatre in Berlin, with the support from the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 'With this play Yesim Ozsoy is executing a silent revolution' (Art-His.com).

General venue access

  • Accessible entry: Restricted wheelchair access. Level access to ground floor foyer, box office, bar. Seated chair lift to upper floors (requires transfer from wheelchair). Temple space has four steps on entrance to space. Unadapted WCs on ground floor. On-street blue badge parking bay outside 14 Johnston Terrace. Assistance animals welcome. Assistance available – advance notice appreciated. For assisted bookings and to request assistance in advance phone 0131 581 5552. For this performance space: Seated chair lift to 2nd floor from foyer (requires transfer from wheelchair to chair lift at ground level, transfer from one stair lift chair to another at first floor level, and transfer back to wheelchair at second floor. Staff can carry an unoccupied manual wheelchair up the stairs while the wheelchair user uses the seated stair lift. Electric wheelchairs and heavy wheelchairs cannot be carried upstairs. If not taking the chair lift the space is accessed by two flights of stairs.

I loved this production so much. Absolutely brilliant story of centenarian who had lived through the end of the Ottoman empire and into the modern Turkish republic - and also told from the point of view of the house's objects, and even a bulldozer. Yesim Ozsoy's monologue was splendidly written, narrated, and acted, to an incredible backdrop of projections and live Turkish music masterfully played on many instruments and electronically altered and looped. Such a multimedia treat at the Fringe.

This show was a bit of a gamble, not knowing exactly what to expect but it paid off brilliantly. It was innovative, interesting and well performed.
"If walls could talk"..... but here it's objects that do the talking, telling the story of the old building according to what happened around them, whether carpet or curtain or diamond ring. It's what the Fringe should really be about, something new and challenging and well rehearsed. Definitely Fringe-worthy. Excellent story-telling from the narrator's various "voices" and good musical effects from the musician. Well done.
