Description

Golem is an artistic dialogue between dancer and choreographer Julien Carlier and 75-year-old sculptor Mike Sprogis. Through their different disciplines and ages, Golem is constructed as a distorting mirror of their life paths. One interprets dance as an ephemeral sculpture in motion, the other sees the sculptor's gestures as a source of dance. On stage, the manipulated clay blurs the boundary between the inert and the living. An organic, sensitive, beautiful piece that speaks to us about the passage of time, our repeated gestures and their impact on body and mind. Programmed by Dance Base in collaboration with Assembly.

It was an experience witnessing giving life through the touch of the artist's hands and through which process the artist was born again, a ritual that felt more intimate. I love the moment when the sculptor began to speak on stage - the story blended memories and happenings, actors and roles. The drum and sound are very generative, especially in a mix with the sound of wet clay dropping on the ground. And I just can't ignore how large the bunk of clay is on stage, the trails it left... it was brilliant.

An intelligent and exuberant piece. The interplay between dance and sculpture works very well. Carlier is brilliant. Go see this.

Aww what an unexpected joy of a dance. Honestly I only went to fill a schedule gap, and because I love the venue, but this is top notch dance, with an age contrast and connection between performers that is rarely seen. Absolutely recommended.

We loved the exploration of the 2-way relationship between sculptor and subject and of the element of play within creativity. Clever and thought provoking. Thank you. Saw other great shows at Dance Base too. A superb venue.

A true masterpiece about creation, interaction and intimacy. I held my breath when watching it. It is about truly seeing, understanding, touching someone and their work. It is a blessing to be able to witness this event, an event about the truth between two individuals. Thank you!

My thanks to Kath Burlinson for alerting me to Compagnie A Julien Carlier performing in partnership with sculptor Mike Sprogis. A treat to see two men exploring a love of play, of dance, of art, and of creative partnership. Their first time in Edinburgh with this 2021 work which reminded me so much of the cross discipline work of the Authentic Artists Collective and the inspiration of Paul Oertel in their lives. That juxtaposition of age (75 meets I guess 35) and artform, together with the father/son like bond of supportive balance between them is very special. Tom Malmendier on drums completed the artistically delicate balance. Lovely to be in the calm haven of Dancebase off the frenetic holiday atmosphere of Grassmarket

It's pensive, a slow and considered piece that doesn't force an interpretation but leaves plenty of space for imagination to fill in the blanks.

a sensitive, beautiful performance that blurs dance, art, and the artist.
