Discussions about drug use and drug policy often involve stories – personal experience combined with knowledge gleamed from the media and other sources. But how are these stories translated into policy, and what validity should we give to personal experience in drug policy decisions? Using interview data and background experience, researcher Anna Ross (The University of Edinburgh) will be exploring personal narratives on drugs policy in Scotland. In particular, she looks at how stories can help us feel empathy and understanding and create policy built on compassion and individual rights opposed to retribution.
