Description

Writer/performer Jenny Witzel tells her story of living on a boat in an “up-and-coming” neighbourhood in South-East London. Born out of protest, CREEKSHOW is a love letter to Deptford Creek and a community fighting for the right to remain. Addressing the wider problem of regeneration, it exposes the real-life impact of the current housing and cost-of-living crises. Bringing to life an archive of mudlarked artefacts, CREEKSHOW is a multimedia exploration of a place transformed beyond recognition. Praise for director Luke Lewin Davies’ previous work: ***** (BritishTheatre.com). **** (List). With sound design by 2023 Offie Award Winner Calum Perrin.

In Creekshow, Jenny Witzel uses a variety of styles including video and projection, to describe living in a houseboat on Deptford Creek. There is interesting historical background, ecology, and the inevitable gentrification found in so much of London. Although uneven, Creekshow is a labour of love by an engaging and well-meaning performer who deserved more than the small audience at the performance I saw.

Great gem of a show, well worth a look. It is superbly narrated by Jenny with real emotion and insight. Even more evocative as we have a daughter trying to find affordable accommodation in South London as the expensive developments take over.

This is a beautiful, gentle little show about paying attention to small details and overlooked places and finding the magic in them. I loved it.

Jenny took us in very atmospheric and ritualistic journey through the history and depths of Deptford. Beautiful celebration of human and non-human contributions to a local ecosystem. The performance dramatises our contemporary relationship to archive in a mesmerising way.

British Theatre Guide (4/5 stars) 39 days ago

A remarkably interesting if finally unsettling show, fairly unique in its structure, gently compassionate in its content and, importantly, sharp in its message.

A powerful call-to-action, and a beautiful piece of theatre too.
