Description

One man walks into a public bathroom. Another follows. The play deals with one of the most shameful yet thrilling parts of queer history, setting the dilemma of public sex against the intricacies of private connection. It rejects the modern trends of sanitised queer stories by returning to examine authentic relationships and characters in an unflinching gaze at aspects of gay culture the twenty-first century may prefer to ignore. Cottage has recently been performed at the Durham Drama Festival, where it was awarded Best Show, Best Writing, Best Lighting Design and Best Actor.

Started off very strong & a very solid premise, however I would say the piece ran too long and sadly, and surprisingly, devolved into a completely different play altogether by the end. What started as a character study of a lost aspect of queer culture seemingly became a melodrama that failed to tie up loose ends. With some fine tuning and commitment to one solid idea, this show could be brilliant, and I have faith the team will do exactly that post-fringe. Well done to everyone involved.

Cottage is an outstanding piece of writing. Brilliantly acted by a very talented cast. Funny in places, tragically dark in others. A great play, well worth a watch.
