Description

At the height of the pandemic, nine friends longing for contact reconnect for a bit of normality in an online New Year's Eve party. But nothing is normal. Before long, this party drifts out of Zoom and into the surreal. TMB – the award-winning creators of Grail Project, Big Shot, and Anton's Uncles – bring their inventive mix of text, humor, movement, dance and song back to the Fringe in this digital time capsule. '10 out of 10!' (Audience review). 'TMB’s work always earns a place among the mustn’t-miss spectacles of the Fringe' (TheOutlierScotland.co.uk).

"We're not really together... but we're close."

This was fun, and I mean, really fun. The music partnered with the acting and editing helped to separate this show from other socially distant/Zoom dramas I've seen. 'Celebration' is an actual celebration of sorts. It celebrates friends, technology and how we can still be creative even during a global pandemic.
This show also touches on some very important and relatable topics like time and losing track of it, how the calendar has changed over the years and how people's honesty and dishonesty become all too apparent when we spend time away from each other. The company do touch on viruses and separation, but not in a cliche, overdone way. This was just a group of friends having dinner for New Year's Eve, and their welcoming demeanour made me feel like I had joined the online call to celebrate with them.
Their use of lighting was genius, and the slight gestures in unison really helped to depict a feeling of togetherness even though each member of the cast were houses apart. I have to say, I LOVE moments of solo dance in shows like this, and this show did not disappoint. Everyone moved so differently and it was great to see. I'm also obsessed with everyone's apartments, they're so cool!
A truly striking visual was the monologue about looking out of a window and watching a man dig holes. The use of shadow and a single tear during this moment of storytelling was one I found very effective. The scenes where the show moved to a different space really, again, helped 'Celebration' to stand out from other online shows about socially distanced performing.
'Celebration' was a great show, visually interesting, fun to watch and listen to, and I couldn't help but dance along with the cast. Also the passing of the plates, genius.
