Description

Caroline Mabey’s husband/boyfriend/partner (whatever!) just quit his accounting job to train as a dog groomer. Time for a life audit. A joyously deft cautionary tale about the dangers of following your (or someone else’s) dreams, from one of the silliest people I know. As heard on the Self Renovators podcast and Josh Howie's Losing It on BBC Radio 4. Writer on The News Quiz. ‘Hilarious... funny and touching and brilliant’ (Guardian). ‘Oddball genius’ (Chortle.co.uk). ‘No-one has made us laugh as much at this Fringe’ (Skinny).

Caught this show yesterday and just managed to get a seat, as it was not only sold out but standing room only at the back. As the (fantastic) posters suggest, Caroline is a whimsical, off the wall, sometimes surreal and consistently funny performer, tackling the story of how her partner (“fake husband”) left his job to retrain as a dog groomer. Besides grappling with the worry of how a household can cope with two dream-seekers at a time, Caroline takes us into hilarious sequences about the nature of dog grooming in her own home and the eccentric guru who taught her other half the craft, getting through parenting with the aid of alcohol, and a thread involving a neighbour who becomes a bobbing threat in the swimming pool which had every woman in the room in fits of knowing laughter. Her delivery is physical, loopy and totally infectious. Highly recommend this show!

As well as having the best poster, this show is up there with the best you are likely to see in this year's Fringe. Hidden away on West Nicholson Street (next to the Pear Tree) it's worth seeking out this nice wee (air conditioned!) venue to watch this very funny show. A warm and engaging performer, there are some very clever jokes on display. Don't be concerned about sitting near the front, it's her partner who takes the brunt of the chastising. Recommended.

Caroline Mabey is a strong performer in want of much stronger material. Her performance is polished (more impressive given her assertion that she’s on the point of a mid-Fringe breakdown) and she demonstrates both the audacity and empathy that would … Read More ...
