Description

Wolfgang Borchert. Doesn’t ring a bell? That’s the problem: nobody in Britain has heard of Germany’s greatest post-war writer. So, Wolfie’s taken it upon himself to right the wrong. In 1920s Hamburg, Wolfgang longs to be a thesp, but stuff gets in the way. His parents want him to be a bookseller. The Weimar Republic falls. The Third Reich rises. He’s conscripted. Spanning three countries, two trials, and one 300-mile hike, this is a life worth knowing about. And time is running out... Forty minutes. Five actors. And one very determined German poet.

A brilliant piece of writing about someone most people here don't know much about, and perhaps should. It deals with WW2 really nicely, recreating and conveying the nonchalance (the Germans must have a word for it) and also the distress, pain and brave cheeriness of Germans who really did not want it. Nicely performed with such enthusiasm.

An excellent, thought provoking, short play which is very well written. Superbly performed by the cast and in particular the lead. Highly recommended.

Absorbing, thoughtful and witty. Thoroughly enjoyed the performance this morning. Made my wife cry with its poignancy.

An absorbing, thought provoking and poignant play. This was a well and tightly written true story about a gifted dissident German playwright in the Second World War. Serious subject matter with dark strains treated lightly but not frivolously, humorously and sensitively acted. The back-drop beautifully set the scene with an elegant economy. I thoroughly recommend this short play.

Incredible. This play is a must see at the Fringe. Beautifully written, jokey and light it has a sense of flow that is rarely seen in the short plays shown at the Fringe. The actors are full of talent, and special mention must go to the main actor, who carries the play excellently. The only negative is that it's only on for a week!
