Description

Winner of Underbelly, New Diorama and Methuen Drama’s hit-making Untapped Award, 2022. 'Sometimes I’m afraid of this play.' Malta: Catholic kitsch, golden sun, deep blue sea, Eurovision – and a blanket ban on abortion. Propelled by three years of interviews with anonymous contributors and their own lived experience, actors and activists Marta and Davinia interrogate Malta’s restrictions on the freedom of women. What does it mean for your home to boast the world’s most progressive LGBTQIA rights, leading transgender laws – and a population that is almost unanimously anti-choice? A rallying cry from award-winning Chalk Line Theatre.

Absolutely gutted and galvanized by Chalk Line's Blanket Ban, written and beautifully performed by Davinia Hamilton and Marta Vella. By turns funny, infuriating, heart-felt and heartrending, this play reminds us we can love our homes and want so much better from them. I loved how the actors wove their personal journeys in writing the play with video interviews and their portrayals of women who shared their stories - often in secret. Well worth an hour of your Fringe!

Incredibly sensitive and difficult topic handled with the required delicacy while not feeling not heavy or depressing. One of the best things I’ve seen at the Fringe in the 5 years I’ve been going - absolutely loved the combination of fun and gravitas and really enlightening show! Cannot recommend enough

We saw over 30 Fringe shows and this one was our absolute favourite. It's a tough topic (that we honestly knew nothing about before the show), but Marta's and Davinia's energy and personalities drew us in immediately. A truly unforgettable show on a very important topic. I'm looking forward to learning more about it and finding out more about their research and interviews.

The subject is tough, but Hamilton and Vella’s performance is warm and welcoming, brimming with a desire to speak the truth, yet still entertain with this unique style of theatre.
