Description

Even the smallest voices matter. A new Australian classic, Beetle tells the story of a child who finds a friend in her backyard; together they embark on an adventure to search for the now elusive Christmas Beetle. The magic of the Australian bush is brought to life through Legs On The Wall’s trademark physical storytelling, and animation created with renowned author/illustrator Freya Blackwood. A tale of resilience and hope, Beetle reminds young audiences that there’s an important place in the world for all of us. 'Physical performance with an Aussie cultural identity and a fearless bravado (Renee Dallow, CityHubSydney.com.au).

Loved this beautiful, engaging show! It was the first Fringe show my 4 1/2-year-old was fully attentive to. He was transfixed by the characters, projections, lights – it's not a fast-paced show, but it's so vibrant and it kept him glued to his seat and smiling. (He also yelled out a few times - assuming there was meant to be audience participation - but the performers took it all in stride.) Highly recommend!

As is often the case at Ed Fringe, this children's show attracted more adults than children. It serves both cohorts extremely well; transfixing and occasionally scaring but then gently reassuring us. It's touching, humorous and educational, without ever being in the least patronising to anyone. It's an absolutely beautiful portrayal of a growing friendship between a young girl and a Christmas Beetle, revolving around a tree, upon which they both perform various antics. Fabulous costumes, adept puppetry, delightful projected images, with occasional amusing animations, complete the skillset used. It's all in pastel colours, which are kinder to the adult eye than the garish primaries which dominate some children's TV. My (also adult) daughter and I loved it so much that we gave it our own little standing ovation.

This show was just gorgeous! Funny, poignant, beautifully designed and able to keep my two year old's interest for the whole thing. Excellent visuals and just a wonderful sentiment and spirit. Go see it!

Special thanks as well to all show and venue staff who were so welcoming and helpful with my Deaf little one's access needs. I can't explain just how much it means to have the entore experience be made accessible. His enjoyment and frequent rounds of applause are testament to this. Thank you so much, everyone.

We're very grown up children but we loved this show for all it's innocence and wonder. It's fantastic staging was exciting and delightful. It felt just like being inside your favourite children's book.

I really enjoyed this. I loved the costumes and the simple but effective set. The use of animation was also well done. I thought the environmental message was excellent and definitely touched a chord for me as an adult, though the narration was perhaps a little wordy and tricky for my kids to fully understand. At the ages of 4 and 7 I don't think they fully understood the sentiment behind the play, but they really enjoyed the performance and were fully engaged. Well done!

Beetle, through Legs On The Wall’s trademark physical storytelling, leaves a lasting impression. There is a powerful message on the cyclical nature of stories and nature itself.
