Description

The Scottish Reformation: a time of conflict and transformation. During Mary Queen of Scots' reign, the Catholic-French court clashed with the newly independent Kirk. The court of James VI showed increasing English influence, and after he left Scotland to unite the crowns, traditional Scottish music increasingly became an influence on Scottish nobility. The Spinacino Consort explores this period through the prism of the poetry of Elizabeth Melville, the Scottish woman to see her poetry in print, and who wrote contrafactum on psalms, English lute song and French Air de Cour.
