My favourite show of our Fringe calendar. Great actors, good singing voices and talented puppeteering. I’ve wanted to see this show for years and was not disappointed. Thank you to the whole cast and crew.

Amanda 127 days ago

My worst show I am afraid. The girls were good singers and acted well with the puppets, but the men??

It too long for the Fringe needs cutting and speeding up.

We absolutely love this show and was really excited to see it. The cast were brilliant but such a shame they were let down by the technical aspects as it was really hard to hear them at times and so missed some of the plot (just as well we know the show well). The music definitely needed bringing down if the mics weren’t working just to lift the vocals so we could hear, the bits we could hear sounded really good with some strong vocals. The cast performed brilliantly and great acting whilst operating the puppets.

Avenue Q (****)
In a world populated with people, puppets, and puppet monsters, a puppet who is unsure of his purpose in life rents a room in a mixed race apartment house, and falls in love with a monster puppet. The music was mundane, but the lyrics were good, if not witty. The variety of relationships that develop help to keep the play interesting.

This is the 12th most enjoyable of the 125 shows I have seen so far at the Fringe this year. I hope to see more than 150 this year. You may see my other three-sentence reviews, in order from most enjoyable to worst, at my non-commercial website: https://fringefan.com/

I’ve been a fan of the sound track since it came out and was excited to finally see it staged. It was a fun and spirited performance from a first rate cast. Special mention for the actors who played multiple characters - this was done with gusto and skill.

As some other reviews mentioned, there was the occasional sound issue - mic not loud enough vs. backing track. So unfortunately we missed some (small) things.

For fans of the original: references are updated for 2024 and (to me at least), it’s still as relevant and as funny as ever.

A totally different show to the usual shows - puppets, humans, and hilarious songs. Very well performed by all - the voices, singing singing quality, and acting of puppets, puppetteers, and humans were very impressive. Throroughly recommend it - bravo!

Truly brilliant, emotive and hilarious performances by all the cast/puppeteers, we laughed so much! Great voice work, puppeteering and musical numbers. I'd never seen Avenue Q before so wasn't sure what to expect, it's a hilariously written show, silly, very good spirited, and really brought to life here by excellently dynamic and engaged performances! Go and see it for sure!!

Absolutely hilarious, my friend and I were laughing the entire way through! The cast were all excellent, definitely worth a watch!!

I need to make a confession. Avenue Q is one of my favourite musicals, so I knew what to expect. This production uses a backing track, which is understandable given the circumstances, but never as good as live band. All the performers were top notch although Gary Coleman’s crazy high numbers were sung down the octave so a little difficult to hear. That notwithstanding this was a fantastic offering of the whole show. It still makes me laugh out loud after all these years. It certainly deserves a full house at every show. I guess the late hour and length of show might put casual MT lovers off, but MAKE THE EFFORT! You will not be disappointed.
BTW, for those who do not know, this is not a kids show!

Absolutely loved this version of the show. Cast and puppets were superb. If you don't know what to expect, I'll try not to give any spoilers, but safe to say if you can think of a subject that Jim Henson and the Sesame Street team can't mention in that show, then Avenue Q cover it! Not for the easily offended, but so so funny. Thank you to cast and crew for being my first show of Edfringe 2024, you definitely didn't disappoint, and infact have set the bar incredibly high for the rest for the shows I'm seeing. Go see this show!

I have been wanting to go see Avenue Q for so long, and having the chance to see it here at the Fringe was an amazing opportunity. The cast is so great, and they really bring the musical to a whole other level with their energy!
Go see it if you can :D

I'm a huge musical fan and I'm still buzzing after the performance tonight! I can honestly say I've never experienced such a talented cast- the singing, acting, comedic timing and puppeteering were outstanding! If I didn't know any better, I could have thought I was on the West End or Broadway! COME TO THIS SHOW or else you are missing out!

Nichola Flatman 141 days ago

Absolutely brilliant show. The energy and enthusiasm of all the cast was fantastic. The ability of the puppeteers to make their voices sound like the characters was unbelievable and then to sing in the same voices - outstanding! All the singing was top quality. The actors playing multiple characters displayed great versitility. The cast make good use of a minimal set.
I laughed all the way through. Definitely worth stay up past my bedtime for!

Went to see the show tonight with a couple friends. All of us were seriously impressed by performance quality and loved the show. Defo worth the watch!!! Brilliant cast, singing and perfect comedic timing. Only thing that was a shame was that the show has almost no advertising for it...we stumbled on in by accident and realy wish there were posters or flyers arround the place cause the show deserves a full audience each night!

Went last night and the show was amazing, I've been wanting to see it forever and the cast did such a great job of bringing all the characters to life and making everyone laugh x great vocals and all round amazingness x 5 stars xx

What a laugh! Brilliant show by a cast of extremely talented actors and puppeteers. A serious message lies under all the humour in the songs, so this show delivers on multiple levels.
The cast all looked like they were enjoying performing the show, which added to the audience experience.
I would definitely recommend this show to end your day on a high.

I saw this show last night and loved it! I'd seen it in the West End many years ago and was delighted that it was as funny and entertaining as I remembered. The thing I love about the show is that along with the fun it really does capture something about starting out in life and trying to find your place in the world. The cast do a great job, the songs are fantastic and there is never a dull moment. The only thing that could have been improved on was the sound, there seemed to be some technical difficulties but also at times the levels were low so I couldn't clearly hear some of the lyrics which was a pity because the actors/ puppeteers were giving it their all. Even so this could not diminish the energy, enthusiasm and commitment of the performers and despite the late hour I was entertained and engaged to the end.

Fantastic show from a very talented cast. Funny, entertaining and an overall great show. I wasn’t expecting much from this, but the production blew all my expectations out the water: the puppets and animations were excellent, the cast were polished (especially when two actors were coordinating a pupet together, which must take a lot of skill), talented and charming. They even brought the puppets front of house at the end to meet the audience and let people take selfies with the muppet-style puppets.
Highly recommend! Please note: this isn’t the schools/kids version, but great to take a 16+ young person to just to see them get embarrassed during the puppet sex scenes! :-D

Incredible performance! Each of these performers is immeasurably talented, with supreme vocals, making this one of my favorite performances of the Fringe. A professional-quality production of a hilarious musical, a treasured experience

Ruairidh Hastie 143 days ago

The first time I’ve seen this show outside of the West End and I was blown away by the energy and enthusiasm of the performers.
There’s a lot of heart and camaraderie on the stage that’s evident throughout.
Audio could be boosted a little more for optimum effect, but the singers mostly carried their songs with gusto!

Seen this show many times still hilariously funny (if not exactly pc lol ) and a few new updates in the show as well to keep up with the times
A perfect end to a great day at the fringe

Once again Ave Q left me in stitches

Davide ianni 144 days ago

I always wanted to see this musical and when I saw it was on at the Fringe I simply had to go. The cast is brilliant, so talented and able to make it look like it was written a year ago. If English is not your first language, remember to sit in the central seats, or sometimes you won't be able to read the lips of the actors (the puppets are incredible but not very reliable lips :D ).

Avenue Q is so firmly rooted in the culture of the 2000s, that there's a risk of it seeming stale and dated, but the cast inject the show with such a breath of fresh air, it could have debuted yesterday. All the actors take to their roles so naturally - the actress playing Kate Monster in particular feels like she could play the role in her sleep, despite how energetic and vibrant she was on stage. Not every joke still holds up, but when the vast majority are still leaving the audience in stitches, and with such terrific singing and charming performances in addition, this is one show you won't want to miss out on

The cast are enthusiastic and devoted to the source material. So, if you want near-West End quality without paying West End prices, this will be for you.

Despite occasional cringeworthy moments, Avenue Q’s puppet-led musical tackles challenging subjects with a surprising mix of cynicism and charm, making it a unique experience worth considering, though not for everyone.
