Description

Irreverent and full of rage, this rewriting of an eternal myth unfolds with haunting clarity. This modern, unflinching tragedy reveals in the glare of death a muted and luminous kind of poetry. Antigone is that meagre little thing over there, who sits and says nothing. In a moment, she will rise from the dusky little girl no-one took seriously at all to face the world, and her uncle Creon, who is the king. She will become Antigone. She knows that she will die – that she is young – and that she too, might have preferred to live.

From the opening tableau the production's intention is crystal clear. The thread of fate that draws Sophocles' heroine to her act of destructive piety is crowded, troubled by the dreams and plans and necessities of the Thebans. The royal family of Oedipus is acted with remarkable sensitivity, but the chorus of guards and the Nurse of Antigone show the impact that the destructive deeds of heroes have had on the people of the city. The emotional range of the actors is only matched by their remarkable capacity for precise physical acting. Highly recommended.

Highly recommended! It brought me to tears four times. The company was extraordinary, gorgeously planned from the very first moment, with stunning performances by the prominent characters and equally outstanding attention to the minor roles in the play, which were brought vividly to the fore by the framing and attention to detail. This brought the full passion of the ancient original and the innovations of the translation both powerfully to life. An extraordinary achievement!

Such a great show, you won't want to miss this. The show is moving and emotional which is helped by the intimate setting of the vault. The cast give compelling and powerful performances. The music, costume and tech are all amazing too. If you have the chance to go see it DO!

Emma, the stranger sitting beside me at the end of the performance, was right when she said, “everybody should see this play”.
