Description
Alex doesn’t want to be a scientist anymore. As a teen, she dreamed of curing brain cancer. Years later, while completing her PhD, her mom was diagnosed with the same cancer she spent her youth studying. This work-in-progress show follows Alex’s highs and lows through her career in science – getting inducted into a scientific secret society! Using sex to cope with grief! Coming to terms with experimenting on mice! Alex weaves together her experience of grief with dark and candid humor, highlighting the complex intertwining of professional expertise and personal experience. Please note that while all media gallery content is provided by verified members of the event, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society does not review or approve this content before it is posted. A very confident show - Alex engaged really well with a small audience, and kept the energy up for the entirety of the set. The content had some good jokes, but felt disorganised - was this a piece about her late mother? Or being sexually liberated? Or disappointment in a career in science? Feels like a better show would have picked out one of these strains and structured the narrative around this. It would have led to a more poignant and meaningful set.

Went to see this at the start of fringe and it frankly set a very high standard for the stand up! It was an intimate space that was beautifully controlled with very funny written material and laser accurate crowd work.

Smart, hilarious, charismatic…Alex’s joke writing and delivery are a match made in heaven. I feel like this show attracts a lot of science nerds, but let me tell you even if you’re not into science, you’ll be laughing out loud and relating to her struggles.

Perfect way to start your day! Alex's story is simultaneously fascinating, unique, emotional and above all else, hilarious! She engaged the audience from start to finish with her clever wit and sharp crowd work and created a warm, welcoming, fun atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Al Berr was an icon, her engaging presence and sharp wit kept the audience hooked from start to finish. While she touched on some serious topics, she skilfully kept the tone light-hearted and fun, making it a really enjoyable experience. On a personal note, it was refreshing to see a fellow scientist embrace the arts, which resonated with me as someone who shares those aspirations!

An amazing show that has you laughing all the way through! Also loved all her interactions with the audience, she has us all eating out of the palm of her hand. Didn't want to leave, wanted to hear even more from her!
